Barcelona close in on the title

20th March 2011 - Barcelona 2 Getafe 1

There are only 9 games now left in the season, with the last quarter of the season now in play. Given that this 2-1 win against Getafe leaves Barca with a 5 point lead and looking at their upcoming fixtures, can they be caught? April 17th and the Real Madrid v Barcelona game could be the season decider with a win for Barca in Madrid almost guaranteeing them the title. A win for Real though and anything could happen.

The Champions League draw this week makes things even more intriguing with the Barcelona and Real Maddrid drawn in the same half of the final 8 draw. Wins in their respective quarter finals and the semi final will be Barcelona v Real Madrid and this would mean 3 games against each other in the matter of a few weeks. An eye watering possibility.

Against Getafe, Alves and Krkic goals in the first 50 miinutes secured a relatively easy victory. Two wonderfully taken goals were only matched with an 88th Manu consolation goal which left Barcelona with a slim but very handy win.

14th March 2011 - Sevilla 1 Barcelona 1

With bitter rivals Real Madrid winning at home to Hercules on Saturday evening 2-0, Barca were keen to grab back their 9 point lead in La Liga and a win away to Sevilla. Sevilla though are always one of the toughest teams to play away from home and with good home support, 3 points is always a battle here.

Alas, after a week in which Barcelona did the dirty on Arsenal of England, knocking them out of the Champions League, the party mood was perhaps still evident, with a Barca side who were lacklustre compared to their usual brilliance. A lacklustre performance by Barcelona is a good game for others of course. A 30th minute Krkic goal for Barca and an equaliser for Sevilla in 49th results in a final 1-1 draw. Battle even.

5th March 2011 - Barcelona 1 Real Zaragoza 0

Without question, Barca's focus is looking ahead to Tuesday's Champions League game against Arsenal, for a place in the last 16. This La Liga game was always thus going to likely be a more sedate affaiir, than some of Barcelona's previous games.

With a 43rd minute Keita goal the end difference between the 2 teams on paper, it was enough to keep the Catalan fans happy and to keep their team on course for the title race. All focus 100% now though goes on the Arsenal games. 2-1 behing on aggregate, Tuesday should be an interesting night.
