FC Barcelona Football News
7th Feb 2010 - Barcelona 2 Getafe 1
The local supporters now seem almost impatient if they do not see Barcelona score 4 or 5 goals in a game and a 2-1 victory seemed almost insufficient. Having said that, with the Champions League games approaching again soon, maintaining a 5 point lead at the top of La Liga will give Barca some breathing space in the coming weeks.
In this game, it was much easier in fact than the tight scoreline suggests, with Getafe's consolation goal only scored in injury time at the end of the game. Up until that point it was almost cruise control for Barcelona. Within 7 minutes, Messi has already slotted away the first goal and it looked as though a flood of goals might follow. Only Xavi's 67th minute goal though added to the home side's tally.
Barcelona next face Atletico Madrid away from home on Sunday 14th February.
1st Feb 2010 - Sporting Gijon 0 Barcelona 1
Barcelona are used to much bigger stadiums and perhaps it was playing in front of a small 20,000 crowd that spooked them as they struggled to kill this game off with a second goal. Throughout the game, Bbarcelona created the opportunities to score but apart from a goal from Pedro in the 29th minute, no more chances were converted. It left home and away fans all wondering if this game was destined to be a draw with a late Sporing Gijon. Alas, Barcelona did manage to hold on and in the end it is another 3 points and a deserved away win.
Barcelona now get to play at home again this coming weekend; their first home game in almost a month. Getafe are the visitors and home fans will be expecting another 3 points and a goal fest at the Nou Camp. Tickets for this game are still available through www.barcelonafootballtickets.com
23rd Jan 2010 - Valladolid 0 Barcelona 3
12 goals scored in three games and zero goals conceded. Barcelona are simply on fire at the moment and twenty five thousand people in Valladolid got to see Barcelona all but dominate this La Liga game. Valladolid are struggling near to the bottom of the table and against Barcelona they never looked confident enough to win against the all star team facing them.
Xavi and Alves all but sealed victory for the visitors by half time with a goal a piece, whilst a seond half goal by Messi sealed off a 3-0 away win. Barcelona are now faced with another away game this coming weekend, this time awat to Sporting Gijon.
16th Jan 2010 - Barcelona 4 Sevilla 0
Nine goals and none conceded in the last 2 league games and Barcelona are clearly back to their best and add onto that the fact that Real Madrid failed to win and what a week. Barcelona are back in cruise control and the sight of Lionel Messi scoring his 100th goal for FC Barcelona added to the excitement. Strangely enough though it was not until the second half before Barca took the lead and even that was an own goal. In the last 20 minutes of the game htough a Pedro goal and two from Messi sealed off a worthy victory for the home side.
Barcelona next play away in La Liga with a visit to Valladolid on the 23rd January, followed by a home game Getafe in early February.
10th Jan 2010 - Tenerife 0 Barcelona 5
After a sluggish performance against Villareal in the last game, it was back to winning ways for Barcelona with trouncing of Tenerife. The sun failed to shine on the islanders this time at home, with Mr Messi back to his very best and a well deserved hat trick for the Argentinian. With 3 goals in the first half and then another in the second half, Barcelona go into a tough game at home to Sevilla this coming Saturday.
A reminder that tickets for all Barcelona home league, cup and Champions league games, are available online through. Book Barcelona tickets.
2nd Jan. 2010 - Barcelona 1 Villareal 1
Maybe some of the Barca players enjoyed Christmas and the New Years celebrations a little too much. But for a 7th minute goal from Pedro, Barcelona failed from them on to ignite and although enjoying the majority of the possesion, they never really got going. There were chances for Ibrahimovic, Henry and Pedro to get a 2nd and 3rd goal but the final touch was lacking and after an early 2nd half goal from Villareal, a draw seemed a fair final score. In end both teams had to settle for a point each witha 1-1 draw.
Barcelona no doubt will come back in force. They play Sevilla on Tuesday night in the Spanish Cup, at home, and then face Tenerife away on Sunday.
World Club Title: Champions 2009
Estudiantes La Plata 1 Barcelona 2: A tournament considered important to some people and not by others, Barcelona nevertheless end 2009 with yet another trophy - the World Club Title.
Argentinian side Estudiantes La Plata put up quite a battle and it took extra time to seperate the two sides in the end. Ironically, it was an Argentinian who scored the winner, although for Barcelona. Messi with a 110th minute goal, saved the game going to penalties and for Messi himself it has been quite a year. 2010 is almost upon us and let us hope for another successful season for FC Barcelona.
13th December 09 - Barcelona 1 RCD Espanyol 0
This game is always tense and with Barcelona holding onto a one goal lead for 51 minutes of the game, it was a nail biting game for Barcelona fans. With Messi missing from the team, Barcelona lacked fire power and struggled to show signs of the clinical finishing for which they have been known. In the end, the game was decided by a Ibrahimovic penalty which neutrals may feel was a harshly awards penalty. Ibrahimovic though made no mistake from the penalty spot and the goal was enough to guarantee Barcelona the 3 points.
Barcelona have a quiet Christmas period with their next league game a home game on 3rd January v Villareal. Tickets are still available now with us online.
2 Away wins in 4 Days - December 2009
Two wins in 4 days and suddenly Barcelona sit with a 5 point lead at the top of La Liga. Xerez and Deportivo La Coruna lost 0-2 and 1-3 to Barcelona and going into the Barcelona derby game against city rivals Espanyol, this takes pressure off of Barcelona. Espanyol have been stuggling this season and have spent most of the season near the bottom of the division. Espanyol though, as they travel across the city from their Montjuic home, will be looking to silence their big rivals. Barcelona though look almost certain winners on paper.
Barcelona will be happy to have two home games in a row and over the Christmas period. 13th December is the date for your diary for the Espanyol game and January 3rd is the next league game for Barcelona v Villareal. For Barcelona v Villareal you can but them online.
The Galactico Derby - 29th November 2009
Barcelona 1 Real Madrid 0: A big win for a the Catalans and a vital one. In addition to the three points, this was a huge game phychologically for Barcelona with this handing them back the lead in La Liga. A loss and Barca would have seend Real Madrid take a 4 point lead at the point.
This game was not the goal fest one has come to expect, but the passion was still there as ever. An inspired substitution with Zlatan Ibrahimovic's brought on at the start of the second half and a 56th minute Zlatan Ibrahimovic goal was all that seperated the teams after 90 minutes. A vital win and one which could make all the difference come to the end of the season.
21st November 2009 - Athletico Bilbao 1 Barcelona 1
Barcelona v Real Madrid is the next game for Barcelona and what significance it has even more so now, even more than ever before. At the top of La Liga for most of the season, Madrid with a 1-0 home win have stolen the initiative from the Catalans. The game this coming Sunday now will either mean Real stretch their lead to 4 points or Barcelona retake the lead, unless a draw results. The additional importance and difficulty of Barcelona's home Champions League game v Inter Milan means that this is a make or break week in effect, for Barca.
This latest league game was a frustating affair for Barca and with a few injuries and swine flu victims, the team was somewhat depleted. Henry after his accidental double hand ball in the France v Ireland game was on the bench but played for the last 6 minutes and even his majic was not enough to gran Barcelona the 3 points. A massive week ahead........
7th November 2009 - Barcelona 4 Mallorca 2
Back to winning ways for Barcelona with a solid victory against what are an impressive Mallorca side this season. Mallorca though were not impressive enough to defeat the Catalans in their home city and with 3 goals from Barcelona in the first half, the game was all but won in 45 minutes. Two games for Pedro and one for Thiery Henry, matched only by a Nunes 20th minute goal for Nunes, meant a 3-1 half time score. The second half was tame with a goal a pience to take it to 4-2 to Barca.
November 22nd away to Athletico Madrid is Barcelona's next league game, followed by a home match versus Real Madrid in the big derby game. Barcelona v Real Madrid tickets are available still online.
31st October 2009 - Osasuna 1 Barcelona 1
If the La Liga season goes down to the wire with the title decided by 1 or 2 points, then it will very likely be this game to which many look back upon. A 90th minute own goal was the equaliser for Osasuna and the difference between a hard fought 3 points and 1. Keita for Barcelona scored in the 72nd minute, finaly putting Barcelona ahead after they bombarded the Osasuna goal for long periods. The Keita goal looked as though it would be enough and give Barcelona a well deserved away win. It was not to be.
The Champions League group games return as the focus this week and Barca play again against FC Rubin Kazan, the team who surprised Barcelona with an away win at the Nou Camp in the earlier match. A loss also in this game for Barcelona could spell danger, with Inter Milan and Dynamo Kiev also in the same group. Barcelona though will still fancy their chances away from home on Wednesday.
26th October 2009 - Barcelona 6 Real Zaragoza 1
Real Zaragoza you could say were hit for six in more ways than one with Barcelona dominating this game from start to finish and looking every inch the Champions. With the knowledge that closest rivals Real Madrid had drawn the evening before, Barcelona needed no extra incentive.
With Ibrahimovic back in the team having been on the bench in their draw versus Valencia, it was always likely to mean a return to the goals which seem to follow Ibrahimovic's appearances. Ibrahimovic netted one in each half but this time it was Keita who stole Ibrahimovic's thunder with Keita scoring a wonderfully taken hat-trick. Goals in the 24th, 41st and 86th minutes for Keita saw him the hero of the Catalan crowd on this perfect performance. A goal by Messi made it 6 and a Lopez consolation in the 78th for Real meant little.
Barcelona next play on the 31st October, this time away to Osasuna, a team sat right in the middle of La Liga and who might fancy their chanches but one suspects will be Barcelona's next victims.
18th October 2009 - Valancia 0 Barcelona 0
Barcelona lost their 100% record for this season, dropping two points away from home, on their visit to Valencia. With Ibrahimovic on the bench, Barcelona struggled for the first time this season and a point was perhaps more than the Catalans deserved in this game. Valencia in fact looked the stronger team on the day and the home side are tough to beat in front of their home crowd.
Messi, Toure, Xavi and Pedrito all had chanches during the game but Barcelona never really looked quite like scoring. Barcelona though remain on top of La Liga and one off day is not enough to stop Barcelona is they can return to form in coming games. Barcelona next play at home in La Liga on the 25th October v Real Zaragoza.
5th October 2009 - Barcelona 1 Almeria 0
Wins whether by 1 goal or 6 all mean three points and fans will have enjoyed an espresso on Monday morning knowing that their 1-0 victory gives them a lead on top of La Liga. Rivals Real Madrid slipped to defeat against Sevilla and Barcelona re now the only team with a 100% record in the league.
The game against Almeria was not the most exiciting game fans have seen at the Nou Camp Stadum in recent years but Pedrito was the scorer in the 31st minute with what was a quality and well taken goal. A deft turn and a solid shot past the reach of the Almeria goally put Barcelona ahead. International games in Europe for World Cup qualifiers mean a break this coming weekend in La Liga.
27th September 2009 - Malaga 0 Barcelona 2
Five games played and a 100% record for both Barcelona and Real Madrid, with 5 wins each. It is clearly going to be a hard fought season between the two, with neither giving any ground. In this latest La Liga game, Barcelona travelled south to struggling Malaga, in a game which most oberservers expected Barcelona to win by 3 or 4 goals.
Ibrahimovic just cannot help but score and his 39th minute goal was the beginning of the end for Malaga; a Malaga team who fought hard and bravely but ultimately never had the fire-power of ability that the multi million pound players the Catalans have. Pique scored a 59th minute goal for the two nil lead and Barcelona then took their foot off the pedal. Thiery Henry got the chance of a run-out after Ibrahimovic got injured but Henry looked a little rusty and needs a few more games to get back to his best.
Barcelona next play Almeria at the Nou Camp on the 4th October.....
19th September 2009 - Barcelona 5 Atletico Madrid 2
After a 0-0 draw away to Inter Milan, in the Champions League in midweek, it was back to La Liga and to the Nou Camp stadium. Atletico Madrid were the visitors and after this drubbing Artletico will not be in a hurry to return to Barcelona.
It was that man yet again - Ibrahimovic who started the scoring. If Ibrahimovic keeps scoring at this rate he will have won player of the season before the mdidle of the season. Messi, Alves and Keita also got on the scoreboard in the first half, giving them a 4-1 lead at half-time, with Aquero of Madrid getting an injury time goal.
The 82,000 plus fans saw a second half which was a little tamer than the first half. Barcelona though have upcoming European games to prepare for and the season is young and a lot of league and cup games ahead. A Messi goal in the 90th minute and a Forlan 84th minute goal for Madrid left the game at a somewhat easy 5-2 victory for the Catalans.
12th September 2009 - Getafe 0 Barcelona 2
FC Barcelona's first away game of the season saw them take a road trip to the small industrial city of Getafe, South of Madrid and this was a game Barcelona were expected to win: And win they did.
It took Barcelona until the 2nd half though to get their first goal and it was that man again, Ibrahimovic, who got his name on the score goal for the 2nd time in the first 2 games. Barcelona if they had fielded a full strength team, most likely would have had this game sewn up at half time. With a make shift team on the field, as Barca prepare to play Inter Milan in midweek, Barcelona won with goals in the 66th and 80th minutes. Barcelona's 2nd came from Messi - a player close it seems also to securing a new contract.
All eyes now to the Champions League group stage and Inter Milan v Barcelona.
31st August 2009 - 1st game of the season
Barcelona 3 Sporting Gijon 0 - A solid start to the 2009-2010 season for Barcelona, with 3 goals, a clean sheet, a convincing victory and 3 different players on the score sheet. All in all a perfect start to the La Liga. With Real Madrid winning their first game 3-2, Barcelona will be keen to keep ahead of Madrid and to pull out a lead before the later rounds of the Champions League take place.
This game started off with Ibrahimovic seeming to immediately be at home with his new side and it was Ibrahimovic who sealed the victory with the 3rd goal with a powerful header in the 82nd minute. Earlier on in the first half, Krkic (18th minute) and Keita (42nd minute) got the ball rolling and Barcelona after the first goal never looked likely to achieve anything less than a win. Real Madrid will need time for their players to get used to playing together and Barcelona will be hoping to capitalise on this in the first half of the season.
21st August 2009: Joan Gamper Trophy - Barcelona 0 Man City 1
Barcelona will not lose to much sleep over the loss of the Joan Gamper Trophy which saw them host Manchester City of England, at the Nou Camp Stadium. This game saw Man City take a 1-0 victory with them and a welcome return for Mark Hughes to Barcelona - an ex-Barca player who now managed The English side.
With La Liga almost upon us, this was a final warm up game for Barca and the focus will now move to the important games with La Liga from 29th August. Barcelona's first game in the league though does not take place until Monday 31st August, with a UEFA Super Cup tie for Barcelona v Shakhtar Donetsk on Friday 28th August.
16th August 2009: Spanish Super Cup 2009 - Athletico Madrid 1 Barcelona 2
Barcelona have started the season off the way they will want to continue, with a win.
The Spanish Super Cup 1st leg between the Cup winners and the league winners (2nd placed in this case because Barcelona won the league and cup last season) saw Barcelona win away from home and looking good for the cup. Getting that winning mentality from the start and getting a solid start in La Liga can be key to how things go at the end of the season.
With Real Madrid making many big signings, it is likely to be a hard fought season. Barcelona fans though seem confident and feel that it is up to Real Madrid to prove themselves because Barcelona are the ones with the silverwear at this time.
2nd August 2009: Pre-Season friendly - LA Galaxy 2 Barcelona 1
Barcelona's pre-season schedule sees them presently vin the United States and a chance to play again against Davd Beckham, aplayer who scored some vital goals against the Catalans. A record crowd of 93,000 fans filled the Pasadena stadium and alas, that man Beckham scored a delightful goal from a free kick and helped his team to a 2-1 victory.
FC Barcelona and their fans will not take this game too seriously and if anything it was a good test and with no injuries picked up from the game, it was a good run out for the team.
The Catalans are still trying to get Messi to put pen to paper and sign a new agreement but discussions continue...Watch this space for more news...
Summer of 2009 - July Transfer news and gossip
It has been surprinsgly quiet on the transfer front so far this summer at Barcelona with very few comings and goings. It has been arch rivals Real Madrid who have been breaking the bank and signed an array of stars including Christiano Ronaldo from Man Utd, Raul Albiol and also it looks like Franck Ribery.
Barcelona seem to be playing a waiting game and are in no hurry. As Champions and with a team who also won the Champions League last season, why should they. They have a solid team although certainly the defence is one area where they could do with tightening up more.... Watch this space for transfer news as it happens.
Fixtures and tickets for the 2009-10 season will be detailed on this site very soon........
Barcelona 0 Osasuna 1 (24th May 09)
Ensuring that the first team are fit and available for Wednesday evening in Rome, Italy, for the Champions League final, was the overwhelming intention for Barcelona. The La Liga celebrations were put on hold whilst focus is maintained ahead of the big mid-week game.
For Osasuna who are battling relegation it was a dream to play Barcelona's B team and end up with an away victory against Barcelona. Barcelona certainly did Sporting Gijon no favours and Osasuna and Sporting must now play out the relagation battle in the last game of the season. For Barcelona, everything that matters now is Wednesday night and victory.
BARCELONA - LA LIGA CHAMPIONS 2009
Alas, Barcelona were made to sweat over the last few months as the title race went close with Real Madrid fighting to the death. And in the end it was in fact Real Madrid's failure to beat Villareal which handed Barcelona the title on a day when they were not in action. Barcelona were hoping yesterday (Sunday 17th May) to celebrate their title win in style with an away victory against Mallorca but Mallorca took the honours with a 2-1 win over the new champions. Barcelona players and fans will not worry about the Mallorca loss at all though, with the title in the bag.
All eyes now go to the Champions League with Man Utd v Barcelona in Rome on the 27th May 2009. Both Barcelona and Manchester United (England) have tied up their domestic championships and both teams now have 10 days or so to relax and plan for the mighty class between these two super powers.
Barcelona 3 Villareal 3 - The title must wait
Oh how Barcelona would have loved to tie up the title in front of their home fans and also to get the title done with, so that they can focus on the Champiosn League final. And it was rough justice with the equaliser coming for Villareal in injury time, suddenly putting the fans title celebrations on hold for another week. There is little doubt that Barcelona will wn the league now, with only 1 point needed from the last 3 games. It all seems to be but a formality.
Mallorca is likely to be the location now when Barcelona celebrate their title win, although no doubt that Mallorca will be looking to spoil the party. It has been a very good season for Barceloan this season and now for the celebrations and final few wins.
....Real Madrid 2 Barcelona 6 (Yes six) - 2nd May 2009
After a scoreless draw against Chelsea in the Champions League in mid-week, Barca fans were nervous about the big derby game with arch rivals Real Madrid. With a slender 4 point lead in La Liga, a loss would have meant the lead would be down to one point and the momentum would have been with Madrid. Alas, Barcelona gave Real Madrid a drubbing and a lesson which will have been painful for the Madridians.
Barcelona actually went down 1-0 within the first 15 minutes after a Higuaín goal for the home side. By the time Madrid scored again though, Barcelona were already 1-3 up after class goals by Henry, Puyol and Messi. Back to 2-3 and then Barcelona continued their demolition with Henry, Messi and Pique goals.
All attention now turns to this Wednesday evening 6th May and the return leg at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge, London, England. Can FC Barcelona get the valuable away goal and book a place in th Champions league final. A tense few days ahead.....
Barcelona stutter in La Liga (Valencia 2 Barcelona 2 - 25th April 2009)
One wonders if Barcelona had their minds on this weeks Champions League tie at home to Chelsea, rather than this away league game to Valencia. The Catalan fans are going to have to sweat it out as the 12 point lead in the title race now sits at 4 points and with Barcelona yet to play away to Real Madrid.
In this game Barcelona took the lead with a Messi goal in the 24th minute and the away fans were perhaps expecting a 2nd and 3rd and an easy 3 points. Valencia though piled on the pressure and began to dominate the game and goals by Maduro and Pablo, in the last 5 minutes of the first half saw Valencia head in for the interval 2-1 up. Valencia controlled the 2nd half and against the run of play Barca did a smash and grab to steal one point, with an 85th minute strike by Henry.
Barca will now focus on the Chelsea game and feel that this is a vital 2 weeks for their season. With the league title and Champtions league title both up for grabs it is nerve racking bt exciting times.
Barcelona close in on the title: Getafe 0 - Barcelona 1 (18th April 2009)
Another close game AND another 3 points for Barcelona. It really no longer matters what the style of victory is, as long as the points continue coming 3 at a time. With the Real Madrid v Barcelona still to come on 3rd May 2009, Barcelona simply have to maintain more their 6 point lead to ensure they keep some space between themsleves and Real at the top of the table.
In this latest game, Getafe put up a valiant effort, although to be fair, Barcelona always looked good for the 3 points. Messi took the iniative in the 19th minute, with a tidy and close strike. Not the best goal he has scored but one of the most valuable because it turned out to be the only goal of the game. With Real Madrid also winning 1-0 away from home, Barcelona maintain their 6 points title lead.
The supporters are now getting nervous and everyone remembers the last few seasons and Barcelona's failures. Surely this season though, Barcelona are good for the title!?
Barcelona 2 Recreativo Huelva 0 (11th April 2009)
Solid and professional explains this clinically victory. Since losing their 12 point lead and then almost giving up their La Liga lead to Real Madrid, Barcelona have seemed to focus on results rather than style and in the last few games and with 5 wins in a row they finally look on target again for the title. In this game, Barcelona nerves were immediately laid to rest an immediate strike by Iniesta in the 1st minute to put Barca one goal up. Many fans were still settling into their seats and thus has to wait until the 67th minute to see the next goal - an own goal by Morris of Huelva, to give Barca their 2-0 win.
All eyes now go to the Champions League againts Bayern Munich. Barcelona look solid favourites with a 4-0 home win int he first leg. One away goal for Barcelona in Germany will leave Bayern Munich will an all but impossible task. Barcelona F.C vs. Sevilla on the 22nd April is he next home game for FC Barcelona.
Valladolid 0 Barcelona 1 (4th April 2009)
Barcelona have been professional like in recent games, regaining their composure and drilling out a few one and two nil victories. In this game away to mid table Valladolid, Barcelona were in command of the game from the start and they always looked likely to seal the victory but with the first half nearly over, Barcelona seemed to be getting frustated. Barcelona created a number of chances and it began to seem as though maybe this might not be Barcelona's day. Alas, it was that man Eto'o who popped up in the 40th minute and a delicately and nice finish meant the Catalans went in at half time one-nil up.
The second half went the way of the first and with chanches for both teams the game could have gone either way. Barcelona continued to press for the second goal to effectively cut seal the game but despite efforts by the strike force, the goal just wouldn't come and this made for a nervous last 10 minutes. In the end Barcelona will be happy with what was a 1-0 away win for Barcelona and which gives them the 3 points they desperately wanted.
Barcelona 6 Malaga 0 (22nd March 2009)
Three wins on the trot now means that Barcelona are once again regaining momentum and confidence. In this game against Malaga, Barcelona were back to their best and with five different goal scorers on the sheet this will surely give the team confidence for coming games. By half-time Barcelona were 4-0 with goals from Xavi, Messi, Henry and Eto'o. Alves and Eto'o again in the 2nd half finished off a solid performance for Barca. Real Madrid also won at home and this means that the Catalans maintain a 6 point lead.
On Friday, Barcelona drew Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals and the team will now be starting to think about making the season count with some vital games coming up. Barcelona v Bayern Munich tickets will soon be available.
Almeria 0 Barcelona 2 (16th March 2009)
It is not always easy to play well the weekend after a big Champions League game and many teams drop points in these post Champions League games. Victory for Barcelona was crucial and it was Almeria who potentially stood in the way of 3 points for Barca.
The first half was a bombardment of the Almeria goal and hero of the first half was the Almeria goally, who pulled of a number of impressive saves. Albert Crusat had an excellent chance to score for the home side mid way through the first half but failed to slot the ball into the net. Barca piled on pressure and after a goalless first half, Barcelona continued to pile on the pressure at the start of the 2nd half.
It was Bojan Krkic who finally turned the game for Barcelona with two very impressive and perfectly executed goals in the 53rd and 56th minutes. Rivals Real Madrid also won but it is Barcelona who have the 6 points lead and the title it theirs to win or lose.
Barcelona 2 Athletico Bilbao 0 (7th March 2009)
This was an absolute must win game for Barcelona with a desperate need for 3 points and the chance to protect their 4 point lead. Real Madrid were also playing tonight and were in the end held to a 1-1 home draw and a 2-0 victory means Barca regain a 6 pont lead in the league. The 6 goal games which Barcelona were achieving only a month ago though is now history and it seems more about hard fought wins and just getting the points.
In this game it was Busquets in the 17th minute and then Messi with a 31st penalty who secured what was Barcelona's first win in 6 games. This win will now give Barcelona foundation on which to build as they head into a 2nd leg Champions League game at home to Lyon on Wednesday night, in the last 16 of the tournament.
Athletico Madrid 4 Barcelona 3 (1st March 2009)
It is becoming a nail biting time for Barcelona fans with Barcelona's 12 point lead now whittled down to 4, in a matter of 3 weeks. Suddenly Real Madrid are back in the title hunt and Barcelona have only themselves to blame.
This particular game though was an epic, with the game swinging backwards and forwards. It was Barcelona who stole the initiative with 19th and 30th minute goals. Forlan for Madrid then took the score to 1-2 for half time. The battle commenced in the second half and the game went to 2-2 only for Barca then to retake the lead through Henry. With 73 minutes gone it looked like a 2-3 victory for Barcelona but Madrid has other ideas. Forlan with his second of the night took it to a dramatic 3-3 and Aquero in the 89th put the final nail in Barcelona's coffin with a clincher to make it 4-3. Barcelona urgently need a victory in the next game at the Nou camp to regain momentum. Their destiny is still in their own hands.
Barcelona 1 Espanyol 2 (21st Feb. 2009)
This should have been an easy game with Barcelona playing local city rivals Espanyol. With Espanyol sat on the bottom of the table at the start of this game and with FC Barcelona sat on top and 10 points clear of Real Madrid, what could possibly go wrong? Two goals for Espanyol's Iván De la Peña is the answer.
This game is always one worth watching and it is often a fiery affair and the fun started in the 38th minute when Keita of Barcelona got his marching orders for a bad challenge although the player might feel hard done by for getting a straight red card. With ten players, Barcelona seemed to struggle to find their rhythm and they were punished in the 2nd half with 50th and 54th minute goals for Espanyol. The fight back by Barcelona resulted in Toure brining the score back to 1-2 in the 62nd minute but Barcelona were unable to break down a resilient Espanyol defence.
Real Betis 2 Barcelona 2 (14th Feb. 2009)
Even Barcelona drop points from time to time and with what was a 12 point lead, this is the time to do it. For much of the game it actually looked as though Barcelona might lose this game and only a late goal by Eto'o saved Barca from the eyes of defeat. A large influence on the game was the fact that several players were rested and others tired, with a full set of International fixtures played worldwide. Several players played outside of including Thiery Henry and Messi.
Barcelona's next home game is always a good one with the opponents being local rivals Espanyol. These local derby games in Barcelona are also explosive affairs and despite Espanyol recent bad form, expect a tough game. If you are in the city of Barcelona this coming week Barcelona v Espanyol tickets are hot property. In case your partner needs somethign to do while you wacth the football, BarcelonaAdventure now have Barcelona pole dancing classes and lessons!
Barcelona 3 Sporting Gijon 1 (8th Feb. 2009)
Barcelona effortlessly maintained their 12 point lead in La Liga, ahead of arch rivals Real Madrid, this time with Gijon the victim. This in fact is the double over Gijon and with a total of 9 goals against them.
Messi (23rd and 40th) and Alves (65th) were the goalscorers today, unusual in that Henry and Eto't didn't score this time. Oh well. The beauty of this 12 strong lead in La Liga means that Barcelona now have the freedom and space to focus on the Champions League and even if injuries happen, the Catalans look already set for the title. This Wednesday night sees the Spanish national side play against England in Seville. This should be an interesting batle with Capello the England manager looking to keep the winning habit and with Spain keen to maintain their good recent form.
Racing Santander 1 Barcelona 2 (1st Feb. 2009)
Even when Barcelona do not win big this season, the games are eventful and this game was certainly full of drama. Barcelona were in fact really on the back foot in this game away to racing Santander and it with 60 minutes gone it looked as though Racings 56th minute goal from Zigic might just be enough for a 1-0 victory. Ony a fool though would write off thsi Barcelona team and that man Messi was there yet again, first in the 65th minute minute and then again in the 88th minute for what turned out to be the winner.
The real incidents happened at the end of the game with Marquez and Pique both getting sent off in the space of 2 minutes. Marquez first and then Pique were given their marching orders for second yellow cards. February 8th is the date for your calender if you want to see Barcelona at home next with Barcelona v Gijon.
Barcelona 4 Numancia 1 (24th Jan. 2009)
Barcelona have now clocked up an amazing 63 goals in 20 games and they site 12 points clear of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga. Barcelona realy can do no wrong this season and the strike force once again did the business with a 4-1 win over Numancia.
That trio with the golden touch, Eto'o, Henry and Messi were all once again on target, although no goals from either side were forthcoming in the first half. Barcelona dominated the first half and it was only ever going to be a matter of time before the goals would come. Messi (49th & 76th) Eto'o (53rd) and Henry (71st) mixed with a 61st minute consoltation goal for Numancia, was the was the goals stacked up.
Barcelona v Real Sporting de Gijon tickets can now be bought for the 8th February 2009 game at the Nou Camp.
Barcelona 5 Deportivo 0 (18th Jan. 2009)
Barcelona maintained a staggering 12 point lead on their nearest rivals Sevilla and Real Madrid and it was a lead maintained in sheer style. Messi, Henry and Eto'o have all been on fire this season and all three were there again in the middle of the action and all pocketing goals for the home side.
It was Messi who got the first goal with a nice 21st minute strike, soon followed up in the 27th minute by Henry, a player who was often booed by fans last season - but who has now without question, gained the respect of Barcelona fans. Henry's goals was a simple tap in from close to the goal and then Barcelona's 3rd goal who from Eto'o - a 41st minute penalty. The chanches were few and far between for Deportivo, with only some half chanches and the sending off of Aranzubia mant that Deportivo played half the game with only 10 players. An 82nd minute Henry strike and another penalty slotted away by Eto'o in the 86th minute meant that Barcelona cruised to victory.
Barcelona v Numancia tickets are STILL available! The game takes place 24th January 2009.
Osasuna 2 Barcelona 3 (11th Jan. 2009)
Osasuna put up quite a battle in this game and it looked as though the inform team Barcelona might in the end be lucky to get a draw from this game. Despite Barcelona going ahead with a goal just before half-time by Eto'o, Osasuna came out all guns blazing the 2nd half and took a surprise 2-1 lead. 63rd and 73rd minute goals from Flano and Padiani were deservedly scored by Osasuna; rewards for their persistence and what was sometimes some nice football from the home team.
The sign of real champions though is when they can come from behind and still take all 3 points and it was the flair and quality which in the end shoen through. In 80th minute Xavi popped up with a nice finish for the equaliser and that man Messi destoyed the hope of the home fans with a lovely 85th minute winner. Osasuna put up a better fight than many teams have of late, but it simply was not enough against the might of Barcelona.
Barcelona v Deportivo tickets are STILL available! The game takes place 18th January 2009.
Barcelona 3 Mallorca 1 (3rd Jan. 2009)
Barcelona continued in 2009 from where they finished 2008, with a quality and definite victory to remain on top of La Liga. Mallorca lie near to the bottm of the league so this was always likely to be a home victory for the Catalans and they did not disapoint.
It was Mallorca though who surprisingly got the opening goal; a goal in the 15th minute from Aduriz of Mallorca. Henry though soon put Barca back into things when he extended his excellent recent goal scoring rate, with a 31st minute close strike. The goal was the result of some classy passing between the forwards and a delicate and precise Henry finish. In the 2nd half, despite Barcelona looking always likely to win the game, Barcelona needed until the 75th minute to seal the vicitory with an Iniesta goal and in the 90th minute, a Toure goal to make it 3-1.
Barcelona's next home goal is against Deportivo. For Barcelona v Deportivo tickets you can still buy online. The game takes place 18th January 2009.
Villareal 1 Barcelona 2 (21st Dec. 2008)
The players will be able to relax this Xmas with the knowledge that they have a 10 point lead at the top of La Liga. The victims this time were Villareal who despite playing with home advantage, were unable in the end to stop Barcelona.
The first half saw a few good opportunities for both sides, but the great passing was not matched with the clinical finishing needed. The teams went in at half-time equal at 0-0 and in the second half the game came to life. Villareal took the lead with a Cani 48th minute strike which he slotted nicely past the Barca goally. With the home fans in full song, Barcelona fought back and within 18 minutes Barcelona has not only equalised but also taken the lead. Keita in the 54th minute (header) and Henry in the 66th minute (with a nice low shot) gave the honours to the Catalans.
It has been a good week for Barcelona with Barcelona drawn out to play Lyon in the Champions League sudden death games.
Barcelona 2 Real Madrid 0 (13th Dec. 2008)
The championship is surely already won for Barcelona with only half the season over. 8 points clear of the nearest team and 12 points clear of Real Madrid, Barcelona are flying.
Beating Real Madrid 2-0 is perfect revenge for the double which Real Madrid over Barcelona last season. Barcelona are clearly the stronger team this year and it was the two key players Eto'o and Messi who got their names on the score sheet. The games was dramtic though with the score 0-0 all the way through until the 83rd minute and Real Madrid up until that point, were always hunting for a grab and smash for the 3 points. The drama was added to before the goals came, when Casillas saved a penalty which Eto'o took and this left the crowd almost resigned to a draw. The key to Barcelona's season though has been their spirit and Barcelona were in the end rewarded for their persistence. Can anything now stop Barcelona from reclaiming this season's La Liga?
Barcelona 4 Valencia 0 (7th December 2008)
With Real Madrid losing 3-4 at home and losing their manager by mutual consent (and with Ramos now in) Madrid's struggle is very different from Barcelona's fantastic 2008-09 season so far. Yet another drubbing of their opponents means that Barcelona now site proudly on top of La Liga, 6 points clear of nearest rivals Villareal and 9 above Real Madrid.
Agaist Valencia, it was Thiery Henry who for the first real time since joining Barcelona, was tghe toast of the fans. A wonderful Henry hat-trick should at last get the fans on his side and it was the old Arsenal Henry who performed in this match. Henry's clever and delicate touch was back and it was a delicate lob which netted his and Barcelona's 1st goal. Henry's 2nd was another beautiful lob over the goally and a third for Henry came in the 79th minute with a much easier finish. Alves netted in the 46th minute and the final score ended 4-0.
December 13th is the big day now and Barcelona players and fans alike will be confident. Barcelona v Real Madrid is the game!
Sevilla 0 Barcelona 3 (29th November 2008)
Barcelona were back to their best on Saturday evening with the Catalans looking like championship material. Sevilla were the latest victims to succumb to the might of Messi and co and it was Eto'o who got the ball rolling (excuse the pun) with a 20th minute strike. Sevilla fumbled the ball on the edge of the penalty area and Eto'o struck with an easy but nevertheless, efficient finish.
Barcelona spent the next hours trying hard for the 2nd goal, to effectively put the game to sleep but Sevilla were persistent and has a few chances of their own but lacked the ability to finish in front of goal. The game was finally decided by Messi who popped up with goals in the 78th and 90th minutes to give Barcelona another 3 points. With Getafe beatig Real Madrid 3-1 this left Barcelona 6 points clear of Real. Villareal now remain in 2nd place, 4 points behind Barcelona.
Tickets for the Barcelona v Real Madrid can be reserved with Barcelona Football Tickets.
Barcelona 1 Getafe 1 (24th November 2008)
Barcelona had the chance to go 5 points clear and with the game being played in the Nou Camp and with recent drubbings of opponents by Barcelona, this looked an easy game on paper. But Getafe turned up for a battle and they had no intention of being knocked for 6 as previous teams have and a 19th minute goal by Manu of Getafe gave Gatafe a surprise 1-0 lead. This score remained through to half-time.
Messi was out injured for this game and his influence was missed. Despite his absense though, Barcelona were pretty much at full strength and at the start of the 2nd half everyne expected a Barcelona fight back. Getafe remained resilient though and it took Barcelona 71 minutes to eventually break through a stoic Getafe defence. It was Keita's goal for Barcelona which got Barcelona a draw and not the win which they really wanted. With the Barcelona v Real Madrid game now very close, a 5 point lead would have been the ideal for Barceloa.
Mid-week see's Barcelona in Champions League action, with an away game against Sporting Lisbon in Portugal.
Recreativo Huelva 0 Barcelona 2 (16th November 2008)
Barcelona were not able to keep up the 6 goals per game but a two-nil away win was just what the doctor ordered and this workman like win meant that the Catalans were able to build a 3 point lead at the top of La Liga. With Huelva 2nd from bottom in the division, this always looked likely to be an away win and nothing in the game itself suggested anything different.
Messi and Leita were the names on the score sheet today, leaving Eto' scoreless in this game; an unusual occurance given Eto'o recent splendid form. With a full strength team, Barcelona did take time to break down the Andalusian team but patience proved important and paid off for Barcelona.
The middle of this week sees a number of International friendly games taking place and Spain entertain Chile, causing Barcelona's game next weekend to be postponed.
Barcelona 6 Valladolid 0 (8th November 2008)
The goals just keep coming and coming this season for Barcelona and if Eto'o is not careful, he could end up breaking the seasons all-time goal scoring record for La Liga. Eto'o scored yet another 4 goals and all of these within the first-half to send Barcelona in for their half time sangria 4-0 up. There was only ever one side in this game and at no point in the game did Valladolid look threatening and at no time in the game did Barcelona look like losing this game, such was their dominance.
In other games in La Liga, Real Madrid pulled off a hard-fought 4-3 goal fest against Malaga with Gonzalo Higuaín scoring all 4 goals for Real Madrid. Barcelona's local rivals RCD Espanyollost away from home 1-0 against Deportivo. FC Barcelona now sit proudly at the top of La Liga and with things going well for them in Europe and domestically, it's been a great season to date.
Tickets for the Barcelona v Real Madrid can be reserved with Barcelona Football Tickets.
Barcelona go TOP! Malaga 1 Barcelona 4 (1st November 2008)
Top place in La Liga was always coming with recent victories over Almeria, Athletico Bilbao and Athletico Madrid and this latest goal fest by Barcelona puts them in control of the division: This 4-1 away victory was the latest in a line of very convinging and easy victories for FC Barcelona. With main rivals Real Madrid also failing to win away to Almeria, Madrid only getting a 1-1 draw, Barcelona will now have their minds on the big game v Real madrid in December, a game which could put distance between themselves and Madrid.
Xavi was on target twice in this fixture with Messi notching up yet another goal to add to his impressive seasons tally, whilst the 4th goal was an own goal. Malaga gave little resistance throughout the game and there only ever looked likely to be one winner, despite Malaga going in at half-time only 2-1 down. The game was blighted in many ways by heavy rain and this made it very difficult for the players and meant that this was not the most free flowing game ever but the result was always likely to be the same, rain or shine. This now leaves Barcelona with an 11 game unbeaten run (including Champions League and cup games).

Barcelona 5 Almeria 0 - 25th October 2008
The goals just keep on coming for Barcelona, with every game turning into a goal fest for Barcelona these days. With 24 goals in 8 games Barcelona are averaging a very impressive 3 goals per game and as they draw ever nearer to Valencia at the top of La Liga. It looks like it could be yet another barcona and Real Madrid race for the title.
This latest win for Barcelona, at the Nou Camp, was a stroll in the park for Barcelona, with all five goals in the first half. A hat-trick from Eto'o (5th, 21st and 24th minutes) and goals also from Henry (13th) and Alves (37th) meant that Barceloan could relax in the second half and save themselves for the next game. Valladolid are Barcelona's next home opponents and the 14th December is the big date for your calendar with the Barcelona v Real Madrid game taking place.

20th October 2008: Atletico Bilbao 0 Barcelona 1)
Sometimes it's about points and not goals and this was a very well won 3 awy points for Barcelona, with Eto'o scoring the all-important goal in middle of the second half. With the La Liga much more competitive this season than usual, Valencia, Sevilla and Villareal all remain above Barcelona still but Barcelona are clawing their way upward.
This was not a easy win for Barcelona and the absense of several players on International duty in mid-week meant that someplayers were jaded, whilst a few are out injured for Barcelona. Barcelona though played a well organised game and it always looked as though they would eventually break through despite a good performance by Gorka Iraizoz in the Bilbao goal.
FC Barcelona play in La Liga at home Barcelona F.C vs. UD Almeria *10pm kick off.
4th October 2008: Barcelona run riot (Barcelona 6 Atletico Madrid 1)
FC Barcelona sem to be improvign with each game and this demolition of Atletico Madrid was a powerfuland exciting performace for the loyal Barcelona supporters. With 60% of the possesion and 5 different scorers on the sheet and a rise to 4th position in la Liga, excitement builds again at the Nou Camp.
The 75,000 crowd saw Marquez get the ball rolling so to speak, with a 3rd minute goal and this was followed within the space of 5 minutes with an Eto'o (6th minute) and Messi (8th minute goal). Eight minutes gone and the game looked as good as over and in reality it was.
Eto'o scored with a deft touch to make it 4-1 after 18 minutes (after Madrid got a 13th minute strike) and the goas were still flowing in the first half with a Gudjohnsen goal in the 28th. The 2nd half seemed slow compared to the first half with ONLY 1 goal nicely placed by Thiery Henry.
27th September 2008: Espanyol 1 - 2 Barcelona
Apart from the Barcelona v Real Madrid games home and away, the local Barcelona derby between the 2 Barcelona based teams are the two real big games. Espanyol are often the forgotten team in Barcelona, whilst FC Barcelona are far well known and supported. In recent years though, Espanyol have bridged the gap and are no longer an easy team to defeat.
This latest local derby was a tense afair and but for an injury time winner from Messi, this would have ended in a deserved draw for both teams. It was in fact Espanyol who took the initiative with a 20th minute lead from Corominas, who slotted in from close range. Espanyol maintained the lead throughout the first half and it took Barcelona a late 84th Henry goal to finally equalise and then the dramatic injury time Messi winner.
FC Barcelona also played in mid-week and a 3-2 home win against Real Betis means that Barcelona are now gradually climbing back towards the top of La Liga.
21st September 2008 - Barcelona knock Sporting Gijon for 6
Barcelona swept away all the questions hanging over them in the last few weeks with a dominant and impressive 6-1 away win against Sporting Gijon. The lack of understanding within the team in previous weeks was turned around with Barcelona dazzling the home fans.
It was Xavi and Eto'o who got the ball rolling with 27th and 33th minute goals. Gijon then came back on in the 2nd half to score 2 goals in ther first 5 minutes, the only problem being that one was a somple own goal, leaving Barcelona 3-1 up. Gerard of Gijon was then sent off for holiding Messi in the 57th minute, making Gijon's task even more impossible. Alas, Barcelona took advantage of the tired legs of Gijon and eventually took the game to 6-1 with extra goals from Iniesta and two from two from Messi.
FC Barcelona have a midweek game on September 24th at home to Real Betis. Tickets for Barcelona v Betis are still available online. Tickets for Barcelona v Real Betis.
14th September 2008 - Barcelona 1 Racing Santander 0
FC Barcelona are still finding their way and more work is needed on the training ground, after a disapointing 1-1 draw against Racing Santander. To make matters worse for FC Barcelona, their arch rivals, Barcelona based RCD Espanyol, went top of La Liga with 2 wins out of 2. There were some promising pieces of play by Barcelona, with Messi instrumental in many plays but the team are still trying to gel.
With 20 minutes to go in the game it looked as though the game might actually end in a draw, but it was Messi who broke the deadlock with a well sltted penalty kick, which was awarded after a Christian Fernandez hand ball. FC Barcelona's first win of the season was denied though with a suprise 77th minute equaliser, which left the Barcelona fans to face another week at least before their first win this campaign.
FC Barcelona now face Champions League football, with a home game versus Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday 16th September. Tickets are now available for sale for Barcelona v Sporting Lisbon tickets (Champions League).
1st September 2008 - Numancia 1 - 0 Barcelona
The first weekend of the La Liga season immediately threw up some surprises with the two big guns, Barcelona nd Real Madrid both losing. Real Madrid started their title defence away to Deportivo La Coruña and 'Real' finished the game losing 2-1 despite having many chances to pull level. FC Barcelona has quite a surprising loss away to Numancia, with this game a real David and Goliath style game, with Numancia not expected to beat the Barcelona big guns.
The season is still very young and there is little doubt that Barcelona will gradually begin to gel and with so many changes in the team, it is perhaps understandable that it will take time. With Real Madrid also losing, Barcelona will be relieved that Real have not already started to pull out a lead at the top.
This season might be even more competitive than ever and teams such as Valencia and Deportivo might fancy their chances this season. It already promises to be an interesting La Liga season. Barcelona play on the 14th September at home to Racing Santander. Next week sees a round of International games with several World Cup qualifiers taking place.
26th August 2008 - La Liga 2008-09
The 2008 - 2009 La Liga season is now only days away with the season due to start on Saturday 30th August, with Espanyol v Valladolid. For Espanyol's Barcelona rivals FC Barcelona, the season commences on Sunday with an away game versus Numancia. Deco, having left FC Barcelona has actually scored 2 goals in 2 games for Chelsea in England and he seems happy in his move to London.
Deco and co have been replaced with some interesting names; names including Hleb from Arsenal and Keita from Sevilla (both in midfield) and Daniel Alves and Caceres into defence. The FC Barcelona defence was arguably a bit shakey last season and it is hoped that these new signings will solidify the yteam at the back.
7th August 2008 - FC Barcelona updates
Tickets can stilll be bought for the Barcelona F.C vs. Boca Juniors game on the 16th August at the Nou Camp stadium and this shoul dbe a godo chance to see a new look Barcelona team. Without the likes of Ronaldingo, Eto'o and Messi. Marc Crosas (one of the Barcelona midfielder's) is also rumoured to be interested in moving to Celtic of Scotland and into the side, Barcelona still seem to have hopes of signing Adebayor. The signing of Adebayor though now looks extremely unlikely with reports that he has signed a new contract with Arsenal of the Premiership.
Do not forget that tickets are also available for all of the Barcelona homes games including Barcelona v Betis and Barcelona v Racing Santander (both in September).
28th July 2008 - NEW FIXTURES are out for the 2008-09 Season

22nd July 2008 - NEWS: Ronaldinho out, Hleb in
Ronaldinho has finally left FC Barcelona and signed in the end for AC Milan. Despite a very strong offer financially from Manchester City of England, Ronaldinho chose to move to Serie A and the might of AC Milan. This move might re-ignite Ronnie's career, a career which in the last 2 years has gone off the boil. Barcelona themselves will be happy to able to get the old regim out and to start afresh as they seek to fight with Real Madrid again.
Hleb is an exciting signing for Barcelona, with this Belarus internation playr looking to make an immediate impact at the Nou Camp. Hleb has also made some noise in the media apparently to suggest that Fabregas might also be interested to make the move from Arsenal to the Nou Camp. So close to the start of the seaon though it seems unlikely that Fabregas will leave Arsenal.
15th July 2008 - TRANSFER NEWS UPDATES
There has been a lot of movement on the transfer front for FC Barcelona and one of the star players from the last few years, Ronaldinho looks sure to move. At the time of writign Man. City of the Premiership look favourites to sign Ronaldinho, with new manager Mark Hughes looking to make his mark. After his success in Euro 2008, Andrei Arshavin also looks likely to move to another club from Andrei Arshavin. and Barcelona are one the names that continually pops up. Several English Premier league clubs have also shown interest in Arshavin.
Eto'o has still yet leave Barcelona despite being widely expected to do so. Some reports suggest that Barcelona might offer Eto'o and money in exchange for Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor. Deco has already left for Chelsea completing the trio of big names expected to leave the Nou Camp.
SPAIN - EURO 2008 CHAMPIONS
After decades of pain and waiting to win a major trophy, Spain at last swept to glory with a solid victory against Germany in the final of Euro 2008 in Vienna, Austria. Despite the close 1-0 scoreline, the truth was that Spain outplayed Germany in both halves and were worthy winners in what has been a fun and quality tournament throughout.
It was Torres who scored the almighty winning goal for Spain; a goal which was well taken and placed by Toress as he beat the German goally to the ball, Torres oh so delicately flipping the ball over the goally to guide it goal bound. It might seem early but bookies are already making Spain one of the favourites for the 2010 World Cup although looking at this tournament Spain themselves could so easily have gone out earlier, after struggling aganst Italy and winning only on penalties. For the moment though, all of Spain will just enjoy the delight in winning this 2008 tournament.
Euro 2008 Update: Italy 0 Spain 0 (Spain win on penalties after extra time)
A game which was highly expected to be a chess game and a real tactical battle in effect played out as a rather mundane game between two sides who in this game lacked any flair or seeming interest in winning the game. The lack of creative play from both sides made on think that both sides were playing from the star, just to get to a penalty shoot out.
It was Italy who ultimately threw the game away with several poorly taken penalties in comparison to some excellently placed Spanish penalty kicks. Spain now face a rejuvenated Russian side, a team who Spain beat 4-1 in the group stages,ut who are unlikely to be such easy competition in the semi finals. The other semi final is Germany v Turkey.
Euro 2008 Update: Spain 2 Sweden 1
With a game to go in the group stages of Euro 2008, Spain are already through to the quarter-finals with a 2-1 win over a well organised Swedish team. It looked in fact as though the game would end in stalemat at 1-1 but a David Villa injury-time goal was enough to secure a handy victory for the Spaniards. With the chance to rest key players now ahead of the 3rd game against Greece, Spain can prepare mentally for a game which will be againts either, Romania, France or Italy.
Group C, the so-called group of death because 3 of the giants in football sit in the group group, (Italy, France and Holland), the grou phas been dominated by Holland who have secured victories against Italy (3-0) and France (4-1). Spain will surely be happy to avoid the very impressive Holland in the quarter finals.
Euro 2008 Update: Spain 4 Russia 1
Spain started off their Euro 2008 finals challenge with an impressive 4-1 route of Russia and with a wonderful David Villa hat-trick. In a group which also includes Sweden and Greece this result and with a good goal difference, already will leave Spain confident of a quarter finals place.
The game itself was one of the better games that has taken place in the tournament to date and this win extended Spain's number of games unbeaten to seventeen. The game itself was pretty much over by half time with David Villa scoring in the 20th and 45th minutes and with Spain creating several more chances. Russia also had their opportunities in the first half, but the quality of the Spanish team, which includes the likes of Torres, Iniesta, Puyol and Xavi, was clear.
The second half was a copy of the first half with another 2 goals for Spain, this time with a 75th (Villa) and a 90th minute goal (Fábregas), although the Russians did manage what in effect was a consolation goal in the 86th minute. Spain now play Sweden on Saturday and victory will guarantee them a place in the last 8.
June 1st 2008: Barcelona Team News Update
Already, with the season only having finished a few weeks ago, there have already been a lot of changes within FC Barcelona and signs are that the team next season will certainly look quite a bit different. Hot on the heals of the appointment of Pep Guardiola as the manager, Barcelona have now signed Seydou Keita (from Sevilla) and Gerard Pique (from Man. Utd).
Edmilson has gone the other way, leaving Barcelona for Villarreal and other departees could well include Ronaldinho and Eto'o. Watch this space for the latest signings and departures from FC Barcelona. We will also keep you posted on Spain's progress in the UEFA 2008 Tournament.
Murcia 3 Barcelona 5 (17th May 2008)
Barcelona's last game of season was away to Murcia, a club who have already left it too late to avoid relagation to the second tier of Spanish football. Both clubs in effect were playing for the fun of it and this was reflected in the open play that resulted in a total of 8 goals. One of those goals scored for Barcelona was from Thiery Henry, his 19th of the season, a good tally for his first season at Barca.
It was Murcia though who took the lead in the 16th minute with a Juan Ochoa header, Ochoa having been left unmarked in the Barcelona penalty area. A 23rd minute goal from Eto'o and Henry's goal left Barcelona with a 2-1 advantage going into half-time. The seond half belonged to Barcelona's Giovanni, who scored an excellent hat-trick with 33rd, 52nd and 66th minute goals.
Despite being 1-5 down, Murcia never gave up and fought back with an Alonso 81st minute goal, closely followed by an 85th minute goal from Abel. With Murcia 3-5 and with 5 minutes to go, Murcia were unable to get the fourth and an exciting goal filled game finished with victory for Barcelona. Many of the Barcelona players will now be keen to get a few weeks rest before the start of the Euro 2008 football championships.
Barcelona 2 Mallorca 3 (11th May 2008)
Barcelona were looking to give their manager Rijkaard a good send-off in what universally is accepted as being his last game in charge at the Nou Camp. Players including Eto'o and Zambrotta could also be on their way out of the club and a victory would have been a nice finale for the departees. Unfortunately, Mallorca do not seem to have read the script and they were desperate to get a win; a win which will give them a very real chance of moving into a UEFA Cup spot for next season.
Despite a disapointing first season with Barcelona, Henry has found the net a few times in recent games and it was Thiery who broke the deadlock in the 17th minute with a solid strike just in front of goal. In the 2nd half, Eto'o took Barcelona further ahead with a 56th cleanly placed shot. At this point, Barcelona had 3 strikers on and it looked as though they might bombard the Mallorca goal and turn this into a one-sided victory.
The game turned on its head in the last third of the game with constant Mallorca pressure and goals for Valero, Webóand Güiza in the 67th, 70th and 90th minutes. This victory leaves Mallorca one point away from a UEFA place with one game to go.
Barcelona 6 Valencia 0 (4th May 2008)
After a disappointing week in which Barcelona were knocked out of the Champions League by Manchester United of England, Barcelona had nothing to lose in this game and for the first time in weeks, Barcelona had no pressure and played with flair, style and a desire which if they had had in the last few months, might have meant a very different season for Barcelona. Barcelona were on fire in this game and the 6-0 score line was a fair one.
After four games with no goals, it was a wonderful site to see the likes of Henry (14th and 58th minutes), Krkic (72nd & 79th), Xavi (8th) and Messi (5th) putting the ball into the net: The only disappointment was not seeing Henry get the hat-trick. The game and in particular, the crowd, were highly charged and the fans used the game to voice their protest against the club President, Joan Laporta. Cries of "Barca si (yes), Laporta no'' were heard throughout the first half, although with Barcelona 3-0 at half-time the crowd settled in the second half.
It will be a fascinating summer at the Nou Camp, with many changes likely both manager and player-wise. Keep reading this column for news of transfers and the latest from the Nou Camp.
Deportivo La Coruña 2 Barcelona 0 (26th April 2008)
Deportivo are fighting for a UEFA Cup place for next season and thus this was an important game for Deportivo, arguably more so than for Barcelona. Barcelona also had their eyes on the mid-week return leg of the Champions League semi-final against Manchester United which stands at 0-0 from the game in the Nou Camp. In this end of season La Liga game, it was a game which if Barcelona lost, would see them effectively out of the title race but which would still be good to win to try and claim the 2nd place and automatic qualification for the Champions League for next season.
The game started with what looked like a reserve team with several key players rested for the Man Utd game and with some other players injured. Iniesta, Ronaldinho, Messi and Eto'o were all out for this game in effect. The game in the first half was one in which Barcelona created many chances, including for Bojan and Gudjohnsen. Deportivo also were quite creative in midfield and created their own chances and it was Deportivo who made their chances count, with 2nd half goals in the 54th and 76th minutes via Rodríguez and Pablo Amo.
Barcelona next play at home to Valencia on May 4th in the Nou Camp.
Barcelona 0 Espanyol 0 (19th April 2008)
A scoreless local Barcelona derby was played out in the Nou Camp stadium, in front of a 65,000 expectant crowd, but despite domination throughout the game for FC Barcelona, the ball would just not find the back of the net. With Thiery Henry and Messi rested ahead of the Barca's mid-week Champions League game against Manchester United, Barcelona were not at full strength and it seems clearly that Rijkaard has given up on the league and is concentrating fully on the Champions League.
A total of 12 yellow cards were handed out during the game (10 in the 2nd half) and this is proof of the stop and start kind of game that was played out by the two arch enemies. Messi and Iniesta came on at the start of the 2nd half but they were unable to provide the extra needed to break the dead-lock.
Saturday 26th April is Barcelona's next league game; an away game to Deportivo La Coruña, while their next home game is v Valencia on May 4th.
Recreativo Huelva 2 Barcelona 2 (12th April 2008)
Despite 2 goals from the ever impressive Samuel Eto'o, Barcelona were unable to nail the 3 points against Recreativo Huelva, who desperately are fighting relegation. Huelva will be much more grateful for the one point, with Huelva now able to keep points above Real Zaragoza and the drop zone. For FC Barcelona, this now leaves them with an uphill task in La Liga, with 9 points now the gap with Real Madrid.
Positively though for Barcelona and in the long-term, the poor league form might be to Barcelona's benefit. Barcelona can for example focus solely on the Champions League and their 2 games coming up against Manchester United. Barcelona also might be ready for a new era with Ronaldindo and a few others leaving for new pastures.
There is still time for Barcelona v Manchester United Tickets!!!!
Barcelona 0 Getafe 0 (6th April 2008)
Barcelona's focus and hopes perhaps now rest on success in the Champions League, with Barcelona failing to beat Getafe at home. Real Madrid drew the day before and Barcelona had yet another chance to close the gap at the top of La Liga, but a bit of luck and resilience on the part of Getafe, helped to stave off the often constant Barcelona pressure.
Pressure continual seems to be building on Rijkaard as the manager of Barcelona, and it would not be the biggest shock ever if by next season Jose Mourinho is the new manager. Ronaldinho also is out for the rest of the season with injury and one also wonders if he will seek a new adventure and challenge, for next season.
Excitement is still building in Barcelone though with Barcelona one of the favourites in the Champions League and a few tickets are still available.
Real Betis 3 - Barcelona 2 (29th March 2008)
Lowly placed Real Betis proved tough opposition for Barcelona in this away fixture for Barcelona which proved to be a thriller. In the first half Barcelona looked impressive and likely to walk away with the 3 points, taking a 13th minute lead with a Krkic goal, and then a 15th minute Eto'o goal to give Barcelona a decisive lead early on the game. With the first half dominated by the power of Barcelona, it looked as though Barcelona would soon grab a third to kill the game off even before the half time sangria.
This game turned out to be a tale of two halves with 2nd half substitutions for Real Betis with Sobis going off for Gonzalez and Odonkor for Capi, Betis stepped up to contrl the second half and to grab a 63rd minute strike from Edu and then to get awarded a penalty in the 75th minute, which Edu missed and which would have taken the score to 2-2. Alas, the surpise fight back by Real Betis was not complete and Betis fought back for a 3-2 home victory with goals for Juanito (76th minute) and Edu (78th minute) to make for a dramatic finale.
Barcelona still have a chance with 8 games still to be played. Their next home game is v Getafe on Sunday 6th April.
Barcelona 4 - Valladolid 1 (23rd March 2008)
This was a decisive Easter time victory for Barcelona at the Nou camp with an Eto'o goal in the first half and three second half goals scored by Iniesta and 2 for Krkic. The score was equal though, at half time after Valladoid scored a 31st minute penalty, but the might of FC Barcelona dominated the 2nd half and there only ever looked like there would be one winner.
La Liga rivals Real Madrid surprisingly lost at home, 2-3 to Valencia and this made the 4-1 vistory for Barcelona even sweeter and gave the Catalan fans hope again that the league title can be captured again. With the La Liga gap now down to 4 points again and with Barca still in the Champions League, there is a lot to play for in the coming months.
Barcelona next play this coming Saturday away to Real Betis on the 29th March and then at home v Getafe on the 6th of April. Barcelona football tickets are available still and can be booked with a number of other Barcelona hospitality events.
Almeria 2 Barcelona 2 (16th March 2008)
It has been a season of ups and downs for Barcelona with some excellent results and then some disapointing games in between and this game was one of the disapointing results. There was plenty of incentive for Barcelona with Real Madrid having lost the day before and the chance thus of moving to within 5 points of the top position in the table.
The game started off with plenty of promise and free flowing play from Barcelona and this adventurous play was rewarded quite early on with a 17th minute goal from Krkic for Barcelona. Pulido though equalised only 16 minutes later to leave the game at 1-1 going into half-time.
Thiery Henry came on in the 54th minute and the difference was immediately clear with Henry setting up the 57th minute goal for Eto'o. It should then have been 3-1 but Henry missed a great chance and this miss proved to be vital with Almeria scoring a 85th equaliser via the feet of Kalu Uche. The last 5 minutes played out to a 2-2 draw and missed opportunity for Barcelona.
FC Barcelona 1 Villareal 2 (9th March 2008)
The despair was there for all to see in the fans faces, as Barcelona finished a disapointing game with a 1-2 home loss against a strong and handy Villareal side. In midweek Barcelona advanced to the last 8 of the Champions league with a 1-0 home win against Celtic of Scotland thus the week was one of mixed fortunes for the Catalan side overall and progress in the Champions league will help to alleviate the disapointing league form.
In this game it was Villareal who scored the vital goal; a goal by Tomasson for Villareal in the 81st minute. Tomasson's goal along with Senna's 31st minute penalty proved enough despite a Xavi goal for Barcelona in the 67th minute. Henry, Eto'o and Ronaldinho all started for Barcelona but the balance of the team was still lacking and surely in the summer time, the defence will need strengthening. Rumours still abound that Mourinho will take over at the Nouc Camp at the end of this season although this still remains speculation.
Barcelona next game is away to Almeria next weekend and then at home on March 23rd to Valladolid. You can also buy tickets for Sevilla games with Spanish Football Tickets.
Atlético Madrid 4 - 2 Barcelona (3rd March 2008)
This was always going to be a tough game for Barcelona with Atlético always hard to play against in the Spanish capital. It was Ronaldinho and Barcelona though who took the lead, with an excellent Ronaldinho over-head kick for a 30th minute goal, only for Barcelona then to find themselves going into half-time 2-1 down after goals for Atlético from Aguero and Rodríguez.
The second half started off sprightly but then chances were hard to come by and it was Atlético who took the initiate again by scoring from a Forlan taken penalty, after Puyol fouled Aguero. Aguero then scored to take it to 4-1 for Atlético only for Eto'o to bring it back to what turned out to be the final score, 4-2. After a fifteen game unbeaten run, Barcelona were beaten quite convincingly this time.
Barcelona though will surely have their sites set on the Champions League game this week at home to Celtic. You can also buy tickets for Seville games with Spanish football tickets.
Barcelona close the gap on Real Madrid to 2 points (24th Feb 2008)
Barcelona 5 - Levante 1 was the score this weekend, a weekend on which Real madrid slipped to a suprise defeat 0-1 at home to mid table Getafe. After falling to 7 points behind Real Madrid, Barcelona has now turned the tables on Real Madrid and are now within 2 points and with the chance still to redeem themselves for a home loss to Real, with an away game in Madrid on May 7th: This convincing victory for Barcelona puts Barcelona back in with a real chance of La Liga this season.
The game against Levante was Eto'o's first game back since the African cup and what a game for Eto'o. A wonderful hat trick with goals in the 56th, 62nd and 87th minutes for Eto'o made this game an easy one for the home team. With a first goal from Xavi and then a 41st equaliser for Levante via Mustapha, it looked at though the first half would finish equal but a Messi 44th well taken goal gave Barca a 2-1 advantage at half time. Excellent inter-play between Messi and Eto'o created Barca's 3rd goal with Eto'o sliding the ball under the Levante goally, whilst Eto'o scored another two classic goals, much to the joy of the home fans.
Barcelona next home leaguye game is Barcelona F.C. vs. Villareal 09 Mar 08. Need tickets for Barcelona F.C. vs. Villareal?
Real Zaragoza 1 Barcelona 2 (17th Feb 2008)
The news the Real Madrid lost away to Real Betis 2-1, makes this Barcelona away victory even sweater, with the 3 points for Barcelona taking them back to 5 point behind their rivals in La Liga. Time on the pitch for Ronaldinho and the winning goal also brought good news for a Barca team who now also have Eto'o due to play again soon, with the African Cup now completed: Carles Puyol also came back into the team from injury.
This game was one where Barcelona for the most part, controlled the first half, with players such as Deco and Henry combining nicely, including in the build up to Henry's 34th opening goal. This was a deserved lead for Barcelona, but they nearly threw it away by giving away a 43rd minute penalty, only for Milito of Zaragoza to place the ball above the cross bar. In the second half Barcelona continued to play for victory, but it was Zaragiza who got the next goal with a 53rd strike from Oliveira. After more chanches from both teams, it then looked as though both teams might have to settle for a draw when Juanfran of Zaragoza handled in the area and Ronaldinho slotted the ball into the net from the resulting penalty. Three important points and a godo away win for FC Barcelona!
